Shelter Island Pier is an approachable bay option for people who want a calmer place to learn. The current pier is a near-identical replacement for the 1956 original, so the fishing spot carries both a site history and a pier history.

The current pier is not the 1960s pier.
Shelter Island’s fishing history has two layers. The island is an engineered waterfront setting, while the pier itself has a clear replacement story. The concrete pier used today is almost identical to the one that stood before it.
- 1950 — Causeway built. This surrounding access project helped connect the developing man-made island to the mainland; it is not a pier construction date.
- 1956 — Original Shelter Island Pier built. That is the pier remembered by many anglers who fished the area in the 1960s.
- 1990 — Original pier condemned. The first structure was no longer serviceable.
- Summer 1991 — Replacement opened. The new pier closely followed the original design.
